Sanoma Magazines to highlight the visual strengths of its magazines

16.02.2012

Finland’s leading magazine publisher, Sanoma Magazines, has appointed two new Senior ADs as part of on-going efforts to further enhance the reader experience and look of its titles. A new AD has also been appointed at Tiede-lehti.

“Readers demand and expect more and more of their magazines and digital channels in terms of visuals today,” says Riitta Pollari, Sanoma Magazines’ Publisher, Magazines. “The overall visual appeal of today’s most successful magazines has long been a central part of the core strengths of these brands alongside their editorial content. Distinctive visuals and layouts set off a magazine from the competition and are integral to the reader experience – and open up a window on new experiences and help attract new readers to a brand, whatever the channel. As the market leader, we are committed to further enhancing our graphics-related expertise across all aspects of our offering.”

Sari Vahe (47) has been appointed Senior AD of Glorian Koti and Glorian Antiikki as of 12 March. She joins Sanoma Magazines from Kotiliesi, where she was also AD; earlier in her career, she was responsible for the graphic design of Me Naiset and Trendi. Prior to her last 15 years in the magazine business, Sari Vahe worked in advertising.

“It is great to come back to Sanoma Magazines and be part of the company’s commitment to developing the visual strengths of its titles,” says Sari Vahe. “I am very much looking forward to the challenges my new job will bring with the teams at Glorian Koti and Glorian Antiikki.”

Jussi Tuulensuu (34) has been appointed, as of 5 March, Senior AD for Sanoma Magazines’ portfolio of car, technology, and science titles, which includes eight titles: MikroBitti, Tietokone, Pelit, Auto Bild Suomi, GTi-Magazine, V8-Magazine, Tiede, and Geo. As Senior AD, Jussi Tuulensuu will be responsible for developing the overall graphic design of the titles and will also take part in design and layout work.

Jussi Tuulensuu joins Sanoma Magazines from Kauppalehti Optio, where he has been editorial secretary and designer. He previously served as AD at Journalisti, where he was responsible for the 2006 revamp of the magazine, as a journalist at Aamulehti, and as editor-in-chief at the University of Tampere’s student paper, Aviisi. Jussi Tuulensuu has also acted as a consultant on a number of revamp projects, most recently as senior consultant on the revamp of Länsi-Savo and Itä-Savo in 2010-2011. He studied communications and sociology at the University of Tampere.

“A lot of work is currently being done to enhance the dynamism of Sanoma Magazines’ car, technology, and science titles and ensure that they better meet readers’ expectations in today’s rapidly changing media environment,” says Jussi Tuulensuu. “Leveraging the right editorial and graphic expertise is central to this, and our goal is to lead the way in showing what technology magazines, for example, are capable of, both in print and in digital format.”

Riku Koskelo (32) has been appointed as AD at Tiede-lehti, transferring from Glorian Koti. He previously worked as AD at Hyvä Terveys and Tehy and as a graphic designer at Gloria. Riku Koskelo was also involved in designing the visuals of Sanoma Magazines’ new titles, 3T and Gloria Design

“The demand for quality content is growing all the time, and today’s increasingly media-aware readers expect strong visuals alongside strong content,” says Riku Koskelo. “This trend is likely to only grow as digital media expands.”
