Journalist Awards and Honourable Mentions
2011
SMF Journalist Award: Journalist Anna Pihlajaniemi, Meidän Perhe
The jury described Anna’s work as follows: “Anna Pihlajaniemi’s article ‘The Best Mother, Finally’ (Meidän Perhe 11/2010) was an excellent example of magazine journalism at its best: it caught reader’ attention, touched them, and told the life of a family while giving it a much wider, social dimension at the same time. Describing the pattern of developments that can see a family left on the sidelines of society generation after generation, the article gave names and faces to the people behind this phenomenon instead of just presenting examples or cold statistics. Anna Pihlajaniemi is a skilled writer and has an excellent ear for the dramatic. She does not try simply to appeal to readers’ emotions or offer ready-made answers, preferring instead to let readers form their own opinions. The upbeat end of what was a sad story sent a clear message that all of us can influence how our lives turn out.”
SMF Honourable Mention: Journalist Johanna Lätti, Me Naiset
The jury described Johanna’s work as follows: “Johanna Lätti’s articles ‘A Week in The Cream Jungle’ (MN 10/2011) and ‘Trim, Cut, and Zap’ (MN 46/2010) represents a completely new approach to beauty and lifestyle journalism in the magazine world. Her work brings the jars and pots of today’s cosmetics to life and tells the stories and ins and outs behind today’s trends. Her articles encourage readers to question what they really feel about how we shape the way we look and understand what is behind beauty and the world of cosmetics today. By putting herself on the line and focusing on her personal experience, Johanna Lätti offers her readers a powerful read. Her articles also highlight the new perspectives that can be gained when a journalist comes face to face with something she has never experienced before.”
