The readers of Cosmopolitan are young women between 20 and 30 years old who are interested in their looks and the latest trends, are eager to try out the latest products and love shopping. They spend a lot of money on themselves and search for information and tips from their favourite magazine. To them, Cosmo is not just a magazine but an attitude towards life.

In 2012, Cosmo will focus even more on taking care of oneself. The Body Love section, which covers topics related to wellbeing of the body and self-esteem, has become the reader favourite and will be more visible in several issues. Cosmo women want feel good and look good!

Supplements can be added to magazines either as separate supplements or glue-stitched supplements, and as stapled supplements in stapled magazines and ground off in the spine in glue-bound magazines.

Before printing the supplement, the trimming/grinding allowances must be verified from the printing house. Ask for case-specific instructions from the printing house foreman. As a general instruction, the stapled supplements have an allowance of 4 mm at the top edge. If the supplement size corresponds to the size of the magazine, 4 mm is also left at the outer edge. If the supplement contains 8 pages or more, the top edge cannot be cut open. The suitability of the supplement and product samples for mechanical production must always be checked from the printing house.

It is recommended to test the supplements in advance. Testing should be carried out particularly for thick supplements, folded supplements, supplements with size limitations, and always for product and material samples. All samples must be approved in advance.

Provide clear packaging instructions (to your subcontractor) regarding the supplements so that they are delivered to the printing house in appropriate condition. Ensure also that they are packaged consistently and are thus suitable for mechanical processing. The shipment must be marked clearly with the required information of the shipment, the name of the supplement, numbers, etc. Excess supplements will be discarded after binding, unless otherwise agreed. The recipient will take care of the charges of the returned supplements.

Delivering the supplements

A supplement dummy must be delivered to the Media Service three (3) weeks prior to sending the supplements to the printer for technical/production check up. If the supplement dummy has not been delivered on time for checking and results in technical/production problems, the costs caused by such problems will be charged from the customer or the supplement can be left out from the magazine.

Transportation costs

The advertiser is responsible for the transportation costs of the supplements. If Sanoma Magazines Finland has to acknowledge receipt of the shipment, Sanoma Magazines Finland will charge the advertiser for the related costs.

Cosmopolitan tablet

Cosmopolitan will publish a digital iPad edition starting on 11 November 2012, readable vertically and horizontally.

Tablet edition readers are digital subscribers to Cosmopolitan and those who buy individual digital issues.

The new layout provides advertisers with new opportunities:

  • Cosmo double includes two advertising spots, one at the start of the magazine and one on the inner pages.
  • Cosmo's theme section domination includes two ad spots within an exclusively selected theme section. The themes are fashion, beauty and sex plus relationships.

In both, the advertiser may use the same material, or different material in the ad spots.

All ad spots are full pages and can be implemented as Rich Media (HTML5).

Instructions for materials

Horizontal and vertical versions of ad material is required.
Submit ready material to verkkomedia.aineisto@sanoma.fi.
Submit "Print to iPad" material to smf.aineistot@fc.sanoma.fi, enter the code ”cosmo ipad” in the subject field.

The material should be in a format which is as original as possible, i.e. as an InDesign file.

Deadlines for material

Submit ready material five days before publication.
Ten days before publication is the deadline for submitting material that needs production. Please ask our media service for production prices.

Technical material instructions

Full-page iPad ad:
vertical: 768 x 1004 px and 1536 x 2008 px (Retina size)
horizontal: 1024 x 748 px and 2048 x 1496 px (Retina size)
The material is used to create both full version (Retina and non-Retina) of both orientation. Retina material is submitted as a separate ZIP file.

Functional full-page ads are implemented with HTML, CSS and Javascript. The ad may contain videos, several views, CSS animation, contact forms, etc. The iPad is compatible with the latest HTML5 and CSS3 features and the ad view functions in the same way as the Safari browser of the iPad. However, you should avoid using jQuery whenever possible because it functions slower in the ad view in animations, for example.

Ads that only contain still pictures can be submitted as image files in PNG format, in which case a link area to the customer's website is added to the ad, and the link area covers all of the image area.

Full-page material is submitted as a ZIP file, which includes both orientations in the same HTML. Landscape and portrait orientation is created in the same ad material and defined with CSS Media Queries.
The index.html file of the material should be in the root of the ZIP package. Other files may be in folders.

The size limit of the ad is 3 MB, and the size limit of the Retina version is 5 MB.

If the possible video material exceeds the ZIP material file size, it must be streamed from a server. The video may only start once the user has taken action.
The ad SHALL NOT prevent swipe events (e.g. do not use document.ontouchmove = function(e) {e.preventDefault();})

Instead of using HTTP, a link that points outside the ad is defined in the format: richie-modal-browser://www.example.com/

The media agency's possible tracking URL should be directly connected to the material when preparing the material. Tracking pixels will not function in ads due to ads' background loading and applications' offline use.

The author of the material adds events statistics in their preferred sections in the ads' internal functions, such as buttons and video launch.
